Beginners will like the simplicity of the Mod-T, which produces decent quality prints, though it struggles with some complex models. We've seen a lot of inexpensive 3D printers hitting the market recently, bringing 3D printing into the hands of new users. That's not just talk: After putting the Mod-T through its paces, we found this 3D printer to be very simple to set up and capable of producing good quality prints. The Mod-T looks more like a concept design than a working 3D printer.

The base is white, with a clear plastic cover over the top. The print bed seems to float on two metal rods. The print head is hidden in a wedge of plastic that lifts up and down as the printer works.

The Mod-T lacks the wires, cables and belts that most 3D printers are covered with, hiding the mechanism in the white plastic base and providing a clean, simple design. The print bed isn't attached to anything, which allows you to lift it off and remove it when a print is done. The surface of the print bed is also removable, so you can take it off the print bed and bend it to make removing a large print easier.

On most 3D printers, the print bed is firmly attached to a drive belt or other motors that move it around.

On the Mod-T, though, the print bed is moved left and right by two grooved rods that it sits on. These match with teeth on the base of the bed, pushing it around as the rods are rotated by motors. The print head doesn't move horizontally: Instead, the entire print bed moves forward-back and left-right to move the print around. It's a very different drive system that looks rather odd, but it works surprisingly well.

The Mod-T works only with 1. There are, however, no limitations on where this filament comes from: PLA from any manufacturer or source is fine. It also offers eight colors of a pearl finish filament that produces a pearlescent surface with more pastel, muted colors. The samples in this review were printed in the Champagne Yellow Pearl filament that came with our review unit.

The Mod-T features a slightly complex setup process because it isn't controlled through a program running on a computer, like most 3D printers.

Instead, you control the printer through a web interface that's part of the New Matter web store. That in turn connects to the printer, sets it to join your wireless network and sets you up with an account on the New Matter store to control the printer. Once this is done, you can disconnect the USB connection, as it isn't needed again. After this setup is complete and the printer is registered, you can load the filament and start printing through this web interface, without running any apps on the computer or a mobile device controlling the process.

Although a little complicated, the startup process worked without issues, thanks to an excellent online setup interface that walks you through the whole thing from unboxing the printer to making the first print. From the Mod-T's web interface, you load models into your library or grab them from New Matters' model library. That gives you a 3D preview of the model that you can scale, move or rotate; there's no way to edit it, though.

Once your model is ready to print, you select one of the three quality presets and click print. A single click of the button on the front of the printer confirms that it is ready to go, and the printing begins. The web interface is pretty simple to operate, and offers most of the features that users need. As well as the print quality presets, you can access advanced settings to control things, such as the infill how much filament is used inside the model to support it and how the overhanging parts of the print are supported.

You don't get access to some parts of the process, though: You can't preview the print layer by layer, or get an estimate of how long it will take.

Printing with the Mod-T is mostly trouble-free. The printer starts by moving the print bed and print head around to calibrate their location. It makes a gentle grinding noise while printing, rather like a large cat snoring or a car in the distance. The sound's not overly irritating, but you will definitely hear it a room or two away. The plastic cover over the printer blocks much of the noise, though, so it isn't overly distracting.

We found that most prints stuck to the plastic print bed without problems, and only had an occasional failed print when the print didn't stick to the bed. Sometimes a loose bit of filament got stuck to the print head or printed model and marred the print.

The print bed does shift around at quite a speed when the print is in progress, but that didn't seem to cause a problem.Although, at its commercial release, the MOD-t is priced higher than the company had originally suggested, it's still at a modest price relative to most 3D printers. In testing, it proved easy to use, with good output quality, despite the occasional misprint. It's a solid choice if you're looking for a starter 3D printer for home use.

Design and Features The MOD-t is simple, yet elegant—the company enlisted Frog, a well-known studio that specializes in technology product design. Its white base is topped by a removable rectangular hood made of clear plastic.

Setup Setting up the MOD-t is a fairly simple and straightforward process. First you snap the print surface into place on the build plate base, seating the build plate on the pinion rods so that the gears mesh.

Then you place a filament spool on the spool holder on the back of the printer and feed the filament through a hole in the printer's side through a guide tube until it comes out the tube's end. You then press Load Filament, either in the print utility or on the MOD-t site both of which will be covered in the next section. When the extruder reaches the proper temperature, you are prompted to feed the filament into the extruder and attach the end of the guide tube to the extruder assembly.

One thing you won't need to do is to level the MOD-t's print bed. The printer does it automatically, something we're seeing more frequently in 3D printers, even budget ones. PLA is easier to work with than acrylonitrile butadiene styrene ABSthe other most common type of filament. XYZPrinting sells 1. If need be, you could use third-party filament with the MOD-t, but there's no compelling reason to do so with New Matter's relatively low prices.

Software and Connectivity For software, you need to go to the New Matter website and set up a free, password-protected account.

Once you're logged in, you download the driver and print utility. The MOD-t works a little differently from most 3D printers in that instead of opening a 3D object file in software resident on your computer, you go to a "Library" associated with your account on the MOD-t store.

It contains files free or paid that you have selected from the store, as well as your own files, which you upload to the Library. To print a file, you select it from the Library. You are taken to a screen where you can change the resolution—standard resolution is microns; the high-quality setting is microns, and high speed is microns.

You can also add or remove supports by default, they're enabledor open a menu from which you can choose custom settings. When you're ready, you press Print Now. A light on a button on the MOD-t's front will soon start blinking rapidly.

Pressing the button will launch the print, once the file transfer is complete and the printer is warmed up. Although you can load and unload filament from the MOD-t print utility on your computer—as you can from the store—the utility mostly works behind the scenes to facilitate the transfer of files from the store to your computer to the printer.

Regardless of which connectivity method you use, you still have to work through your library in the New Matter store to launch a print, so you need an active Internet connection in order to print.

If your Internet connection is prone to frequent outages, the MOD-t wouldn't be a good choice. Also, several times when I tried to upload files from my computer to my Library, the files would not upload, although each worked on the second try.

Printing In testing the MOD-t, I printed seven files, including a starter file that appeared in my Library when I opened the account, another file from the MOD-t store, and some of our standard test files that I uploaded. I experienced three misprints.

As a packaged product for the beginner market, the MOD-t is a nearly perfect printer, but the central tenet of the now-defunct browser app as guiding the whole operation means the MOD-t is more or less unnecessary. As more entry-level 3D printers geared towards the novice flood the market, it can be troublesome to differentiate the good from the bad.

Among these is the NewMatter MOD-t 3D printer, a marvel of minimalist design touted as one the most user-friendly printers on the market today.

NewMatter employed the design prowess of technology design studio Frog Design to conjure up the sharp, clean, and sleek white look, and it shows.

The most amusing aspect of this focus on design is that it carries over to functionality as we found out when assembling and setting up. NewMatter has intentionally gone out of its way to make the MOD-t as friendly and functional as possible.

The only interactive element is a backlit button on the bottom left of the unit used to trigger, pause, or stop prints. The layer resolution options are surprisingly varied for such a small unit, with the ability to trigger faster prints at 0.

The MOD-t boasts a max speed of 80 mm per second. The nozzle is a fairly standard 0. The MOD-t internal workings diverge from the standardized Cartesian fused filament fabrication build and incorporate a rather novel axis control system.

The build plate sits on the pinions via grooves or teeth that lie underneath and catch the gears. As the gears and teeth interact, the build plate is latched and moves on the Y and X axes. The Z-axis is assured by two vertical perpendicular pinions holding the extruder that act in the same way. A much simpler design lowers production costs and allows NewMatter to ship the MOD-t at such a competitive price point. The build plate is sadly not heated but is equipped with a removable flexible plastic surface plate to aid stability and the removal of prints by bending the plastic to ease them off.

It is the build platform that I found to be the most impressive part of the printer. The platform isn't attached to anything. You simply lay it atop a couple of x- and y-axis gear rods, and you're done. The bottom of the build platform has tracks that ride on the gear rods during a build. The platform also has a flexible plastic cover that slides off and allows you to bend it to remove printed objects; there's literally no need to scrape objects off of the build platform with a spatula as is so often required with other printers.

After you install the build platform, you hang a plastic filament reel holder on the back of the printer, feed the filament through a hole in the rear of the machine until it comes out of the machine's filament guide tube and hit "Load Filament" on the software.

That's it. You're done. The MOD-t prints with standard 1. While it may support other polymers, New Matter does not list any of them. This is a relatively quiet machine -- not the quietest I've used, but certainly not a distraction even when you're sitting next to it.

The only noise comes from the unit's fan, located in the printer head housing, and the print platform rolling across the gear rods. The extruder head is also extremely simple to change out, requiring the removal of a single hex nut the wrench for which is supplied. All the processing of STL or OBJ object files, from uploading to print commands to slicing and print generation, is performed on New Matter's online servers.

The printable file then gets uploaded to the 3D printer on your desktop. You can also download your own STL files from any number of unrelated online sites and send them to the MOD-t printer from your computer.
